Live Commentary: Everton 2-2 Newcastle United - as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live coverage of tonight's Premier League encounter between Everton and Newcastle United at Goodison Park.

Good evening and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of tonight's Premier League encounter between Everton and Newcastle United at Goodison Park.

The Toffees – notoriously slow starters – have gained six points from a possible nine this season to occupy ninth spot in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, Newcastle have won one, drawn one and lost one of their opening three games of the new campaign to sit in 13th.

Everton will enter the match full of confidence having beaten the Magpies 3-1 the last time the two sets met at the end of last season. Meanwhile, they have lost just one of their last 11 league games.

David Moyes's side, who are on a five-match unbeaten run, could move into the top three with victory this evening, but they face a Newcastle side looking for their 1000th goal in the Premier League.

>Full team news for the match

Please note that kickoff is at 8pm.

10pmThat just about does it for me this evening. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for the action and be sure to join us for the Champions League fixtures tomorrow. Good night!

9.58pmJust an amazing match. However, we will be left talking about decisions from officials once more. Certainly the game of the weekend.

9.56pmAnd breathe! Good grief. Four goals, two disallowed goals. A host of bookings. What more could you want? Baines opened the scoring for Everton in the first period, but Ba levelled it early in the second. Everton thought they had won it late on when Anichebe headed over the line - but it was not given. The Nigerian did score moments later, but a late Ba strike levelled it at 2-2. Incredible.

FULL-TIMEEverton 2-2 Newcastle United

90 min+3Change for Newcastle as Cabaye is replaced by Gael Bigimana. Little over a minute remaining at Goodison Park. It looks like both sides will share the points. Unless...

90 min+2Is there time for a winner? Newcastle look the more likely as they flood forward. However, Distin heads the danger clear.

90 minWe will play four additional minutes. Time for another five goals each surely?

90 minOh no no no. Ba has popped up in the area to fire his side back into the match. What is there left to say?

90 minGOAL! Everton 2-2 Newcastle (Ba)

89 minOh my word. You just cannot write these scripts. This is the Premier League. Is there any league more exciting? Surely it's the winner.

88 minWow! Wonderful from Anichebe as he turns in the box before firing it past Harper. Brilliant.

88 minGOAL! Everton 2-1 Newcastle (Anichebe)

88 minAnother sighter for the home side as Fellaini heads towards Anichebe, but Taylor comes across to clear the danger.

86 minChance! Glorious chance for Newcastle to win it as Ben Arfa advances on goal, but Howard makes a fine save. How has he not scored? What an incredible match.

85 minIt's a really poor challenge from Fellaini as he appears to stamp on Williamson. But it is just a yellow for the Belgian. It was a horrible challenge. He should have walked.

83 minChange for Everton as Mirallas is replaced by Steven Naismith. It's been a really good showing from the Belgian.

82 minPhew. What a match. And we still have 10 minutes left. You just know that there is a winner in this, but for who? Newcastle are on the ball at the moment.

81 minConfirmed: Anichebe's header was over the line.

80 minAmong the decision Ben Arfa sprinted down the other end, was felled, but stayed on his feet. However, the referee had already blown for a foul. Two massive calls. And they have both been called wrong.

79 minReal controversy here as the goal is not given. Goal-line technology anyone? Meanwhile, Cisse is replaced by Shola Ameobi.

78 minOH MY WORD! How have Everton not scored?! Anichebe smashes a header from close range - and it went in. But it has not been given. That should be a goal for Everton.

77 minFellaini looks in trouble here as he falls on his shoulder. However, early signs suggest that he will be alright to continue.

75 minChance! So nearly a winner for Everton as Pienaar picks out Osman in the box, but he curls his effort just wide of the post.

74 minManchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson looks on with 15 minutes remaining this evening. A bit scrappy at the moment with possession being exchanged.

72 minEverton just cannot keep the ball at the moment with Fellaini and Osman guilty of handing possession straight back to Newcastle. It is an entirely different match from the opening half.

70 minNewcastle smell a rat here as Cabaye buys a corner from Distin. However, Distin eases out Taylor as the ball goes for an Everton throw.

68 minWonderful play from Ben Arfa as he dances down the left side of the Everton defence, but Hibbert makes a fine challenge. Suddenly Newcastle look the more likely.

66 minAnother sighter for Newcastle as Ben Arfa attempts to slip in Ba, but Distin just clears the danger. This is anyone's game at the moment.

64 minChance! Oh my word! Chance for Anichebe as Taylor sells Harper short, but the Newcastle goalkeeper just beats the Nigerian to the ball.

62 minChance! Fine opportunity for Newcastle as Perch finds Cisse in the box, but his volley is just over the crossbar. What a game we have on our hands.

62 minEverton have the ball in the back of the net as Fellaini slips it under Harper, but the linesman flag is raised. It was so so tight. That could well have been given. Better from Everton.

60 minAnother half-chance for Everton as Baines whips a wonderful cross into the box, but it's just too high for Fellaini. That was extremely close.

58 minSuddenly it's Newcastle who look the most likely as Ben Arfa finds a cross to the back post, but Jagielka just beats Ba to possession. It's the away fans making the noise now.

56 minAnother sighter for Everton as Fellaini dances into the Newcastle box, but Perch makes the challenge. Hardly time to take a breath at the moment!

54 minHalf-chance for Newcastle as Ben Arfa picks up possession outside the box, but his ball to Ba is just too short. Meanwhile, Perch denies Mirallas at the other end.

54 minSo, 54 minutes played at Goodison and we are level at 1-1. It is totally different to the first period. Newcastle are suddenly a real threat in attacking areas.

52 minReal end-to-end football at the moment as both sides flood forward in search of their second. What an atmosphere inside Goodison. This is a proper football match.

50 minWhat an introduction. That was always the danger for Everton after just scoring once. Suddenly it's all Newcastle as they flood forward. What has happened here?

49 minOh my word. It's brilliant from Cabaye as he slips in Ba - and the striker fires it past Howard.

49 minGOAL! Everton 1-1 Newcastle (Ba)

48 minMirallas is involved immediately in the second period as he links with Hibbert down the right, but Williamson makes the clearance. End-to-end stuff at the moment.

46 minBa is involved straight away as he attempts to find Cisse in the box, but the striker had just drifted offside. Better from the away side.

46 minNewcastle kick us off as the rain continues to fall at Goodison.

9.04pmChange for Newcastle at the break with Ba replacing Marveaux. Not a great surprise to see it made so early.

9.04pmHere we go then. Both sets of players emerge onto the pitch for the second period. Can Newcastle respond?

9.02pmHere's a word from former England defender Danny Mills on the BBC: "Everything good that Everton have done, Kevin Mirallas seems to have been involved in. Everton started strongly and sharply. They are well on top. Alan Pardew going down to the tunnel and his players are in trouble. He will be giving his players the hairdryer."

9pmOne thing is for certain, Magpies boss Alan Pardew needs to change it at the break. I would not be surprised to see Demba Ba introduced at the break. They have to do something.

8.58pmI know it's one game, and I know it's early in the season. But on this form, Everton really are as good as any team in the league. Could they make a push for a Champions League spot this season?

8.56pmIt just hasn't happened for Newcastle this evening. We have seen nothing from Cisse or Ben Arfa, while Cabaye has not been allowed to get on the ball. For Everton, Baines and Mirallas have been their stars.

8.54pmPerhaps the only thing that will worry David Moyes is that they didn't add another goal. At 1-0, you are always vulnerable.

8.52pmA few statistics to bring you from the opening half. Everton have dominated possession with 60%, while they have had seven shots to Newcastle's two.

8.50pmOh my word. What a half from Everton. They lead courtesy of a Leighton Baines goal after 15 minutes, but it should have been so much more. Newcastle simply have not turned up this evening.

HALF-TIMEEverton 1-0 Newcastle

45 min+2Not a great deal happening in the three minutes of added time as both sides ready themselves for the break.

45 minWe will play an additional three minutes at the end of the half. Newcastle must get to the break with the score as it stands.

44 minMeanwhile, change for Everton as the injured Jelavic is replaced by Victor Anichebe.

43 minChance! Another opportunity for Everton as Pienaar dances into the box, but he curls it just wide. Terrible defending from the away side.

42 minChance! This boy Mirallas looks a proper proper player. The Belgian beats two men outside the box, but his shot is collected by Harper.

40 minStill Everton control possession in midfield as David Moyes looks on. Every time they go forward they look dangerous. But in fairness, Williamson has done well against Fellaini thus far.

38 minChance! Best chance of the match for Newcastle as Cisse finds Anita in the box, but his strike is cleared off the line by Baines. What a chance for the away side.

37 minIt is just incredible how well Everton press the ball. It's almost like watching Barcelona - not the attacking side of course. So, little under 10 minutes until the break at Goodison.

35 minPenalty shout for the home side as Osman is felled in the box by Cabaye, but it would have been really soft. The referee has got it spot on.

33 minThe rain is beginning to fall at Goodison, but it has not changed the flow of the game. Newcastle simply must get to the break in touching distance. If it goes to two, then for me, it's game over.

31 minChance! Another fine opportunity for Everton as Jagielka smashes an effort from outside the box, but it clips the outside of the post. Brilliant.

31 minAnother booking is handed out as Anita brings down Hibbert. It wasn't a great challenge. However, Harper punches Pienaar's free kick clear.

29 minStill Everton pass and probe in the Newcastle half with Fellaini seeing plenty of the ball. There just seems to be so much room in the Magpies' midfield.

27 min...Chance! Newcastle's best chance of the match as it falls to Cisse inside the box, but his volley just moves wide of the post. What an opportunity.

26 minChance for Newcastle as Distin fells Cisse outside the box, Marveaux will take it...

25 minPienaar has a problem here as he is crunched by Anita, but it was a 50/50 challenge. Finally a chance for Newcastle to breathe.

23 minChance! Another sighter for Everton as Mirallas turns in the box, but his shot is straight at Harper.

22 minAgain it's fantastic play from Everton as Mirallas slips in Jelavic, but he is just crowded out in the box. It's just all Everton at the moment. It's like torture for the away side.

20 minChance! Wonderful play from Mirallas as he creates space just outside the box, but his strike is wide of the post. He looks a player already.

19 minEverton continue to find the gaps as they pass and probe in the Newcastle half. Everything is just so well measured. On this form, they are as good as any team in the league. Period.

17 minPienaar played such a key role in the goal as well as he back-heeled to the England defender. Newcastle just need a period of possession here. They are really struggling to contain the Toffees.

16 minIt had been coming. How do Newcastle respond? Everton are not a team that give away leads, especially at home. The crowd are lifting the roof off.

15 minEverton take the lead and it's just brilliant from Baines as he dances into the area before smashing it past Harper. Brilliant.

15 minGOAL! Everton 1-0 Newcastle (Baines)

14 minSuddenly Newcastle just start to put two or three passes together, but the final ball to Cisse is not on at the moment. Meanwhile, Everton attack full of ideas and invention.

13 minIt's all Everton at the moment as they continue to pass and probe in the Newcastle half. The away side are just not in this at the moment.

11 minChance! Best chance of the match falls to Pienaar as Baines finds the South African in the box, but he fires it wide of the goal. What an opportunity.

11 minBit of a scrappy match at the moment with both sides handing possession to the other in midfield. No real attacking intent from Newcastle thus far, with Everton looking the most likely.

9 minFellaini continues to have a say in the early stages as he flicks a header onto Pienaar, but the midfielder's shot is high and wide of the crossbar.

7 minMeanwhile, first yellow card of the night goes to Phil Neville as he clatters into Cisse. Free kick Newcastle on the half-way line.

6 minIt's sloppy from Newcastle as Ben Arfa finds Cisse in the box, but the striker heads it straight out of play. You just get the feeling that the Magpies need to score first tonight.

5 minJelavic has returned to the fold, but he does not look that happy. Meanwhile, Everton have just begun to dictate possession in midfield.

3 minIt came at a price as well with Jelavic smashing into the post when tapping home. It does not look good for the home side. He may have to come off.

2 minEverton have the ball in the net as Jelavic finds the bottom corner from close range, but the flag is raised! It was brilliant play from Mirallas in the build-up, but the striker was just offside.

1 minReally bright start from Newcastle as Ben Arfa picks up possession before running at Tony Hibbert, but he is just crowded out at the vital moment.

1 minHere we go then. Everton kick us off on this mild evening at Goodison. Here's to a good match.

7.59pmAnother nice touch from Everton as they play their very own tribute to those who lost their lives at Hillsborough. It says a great deal about this football club. Wonderfully observed. Just brilliant to see.

7.58pmWonderful atmosphere inside Goodison Park this evening as you would expect. Mild evening, nice surface. Just perfect for a game of football.

7.56pmEmotional scenes as the players emerge. Liverpool and Everton mascots on display. It's more than football. Hopefully we can all learn something from the past week.

7.54pmHere we go then. Both sets of players are emerging from the tunnel. Will anyone refuse to shake hands in this one?

7.52pmIt's prediction time! My favourite moment. I can see a tight match this evening. But I'm backing Everton to win 2-1. I think they are going to have a really big season.

7.50pmMeanwhile, it's a really nice touch from Everton with their ball boys wearing 96 tonight in tribute to the victims at Hillsborough. Class.

7.48pmA word from Toffees boss David Moyes on Kevin Miralles: "Kevin Mirallas is hopefully going to give us goals. He adds pace. We have a decent squad and I wanted to keep as many of them involved as I possibly can, which is why he starts," he told Sky Sports News.

7.46pmThe Toffees also seem to enjoy their football on a Monday, winning their last three Premier League matches on that particular day, without conceding a goal. Will that record continue this evening?

7.44pmJust a reminder that Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will have to settle for a place in the stands this evening. The former Charlton boss is serving a two-game ban for pushing assistant Peter Kirkup on the opening day against Tottenham Hotspur.

7.42pmEverton have also won five of their last seven home matches against the Magpies, but Newcastle recorded a 6-0 win when the pair met at Goodison Park 100 years ago - how's that for a piece of history?

7.40pmEverton's main absentee this evening is Darron Gibson. Meanwhile, Bryan Oviedo is not yet available after joining in August. Newcastle have had a bit of a horror show with injuries with Tim Krul, Fabio Coloccini, Danny Simpson and Cheick tiote just four of their first-team stars on the sidelines.

7.38pmMeanwhile, Newcastle have endured a stuttering start to the new season. They recorded an opening day victory against Tottenham Hotspur, before losing to Chelsea and drawing 1-1 with Aston Villa in their last league encounter. They have also struggled for goals this season with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse yet to hit the back of the net.

7.36pmThey were beaten by West Bromwich Albion in their last league encounter before the international break, but another win this evening would put them level on points with Manchester United.

7.34pmLooking back at both sides' form thus far. Everton began their season with an impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester United. Meanwhile, they recorded another three points away to Aston Villa on the second weekend of the season.

7.32pmSo there we have it. Kevin Miralles makes his first start in the Premier League for Everton. Meanwhile, Sylvain Marveaux starts in place of Demba Ba. There is also a start for Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper.

7.30pmTeams:

Everton: Howard; Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Neville, Osman, Fellaini, Pienaar; Jelavic, Mirallas

Newcastle: Harper; Perch, S Taylor, Williamson, Santon; Anita, Gutierrez; Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Marveaux; Cisse

7.30pmTEAM NEWS: Kevin Miralles starts for Everton, but Demba Ba misses out for Newcastle.

7.30pmGood evening all! What a weekend of Premier League football we had. Comprehensive wins for Manchester United and Arsenal were overshadowed by draws for Manchester City and Liverpool. Meanwhile, THAT handshake at Loftus Road also occupied our attention. But now we switch to tonight's action between two sides that could be in the shake-up at the end of the season.
