Arsene Wenger against idea of home-grown quota system

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger opposes the Football Association's idea of a home-grown quota system in the Premier League, believing that it would promote mediocrity.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is against the Football Association's idea to introduce a quota system to the Premier League.

Earlier this week FA chairman Greg Dyke proposed that clubs in the top flight would have to have 12 home-grown players in their squad, raising the threshold from eight in an attempt to aid the England team.

However, Wenger feels that the move would not benefit the national side and would promote mediocrity in the Premier League.

"I believe that we are in the world of competition. Competition means either you or me is the best one. We have to accept that," Wenger told beIN Sports.

"That means as well that the rules of the game must be structured to favour the best or we are not in a competition anymore.

"So we can say one of two things - we protect the mediocre or we produce the best players."

UEFA president Michel Platini backed the proposal from Dyke, suggesting that the idea could be implemented across Europe.
