Mikel Arteta gives quadruple Arsenal injury update after Tottenham defeat including Leandro Trossard, Riccardo Calafiori latest

Left-sided battle brewing as Arteta gives quadruple Arsenal injury update

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Leandro Trossard felt a "little tweak" following his withdrawal in Thursday's North London derby loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium international was introduced for the second half of the Gunners' 1-0 defeat in Hong Kong, where Pape Sarr scored the winner with an astonishing 40-yard lob towards the end of the opening 45.

Trossard was only on the field for 17 minutes before having to come off for Reiss Nelson, as the Belgian went down of his own accord and gingerly walked off the field.

The manner of Trossard's exit immediately sparked concern of a possible muscle problem for the 30-year-old, whose fitness record has been nothing short of exceptional since he joined the Gunners in January 2023.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion man did not miss a single Premier League match in the 2024-25 season, but he is already at risk of sitting out the Gunners' opening contest of the 2025-26 campaign after Thursday's blow.

Speaking to the media in his post-game press conference, Arteta confirmed that the experienced attacker had felt something soon after coming on, although he had no further information just after the final whistle.

"He felt a little tweak, I think he tried to turn and he was pushed and he felt something muscular so we'll have to assess him," the Spaniard said.

Excluding long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus, Trossard is now the fourth man in the Arsenal infirmary alongside Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori, the latter of whom picked up a problem against Newcastle United at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Timber did not play a single minute on the Gunners' tour of Asia following his ankle operation, while fellow defender Gabriel picked up a fresh niggle after recovering from hamstring surgery.

However, Arteta does not believe that any of the three could miss Manchester United in Premier League gameweek one, adding: "I don't think so, they’ve been involved in the last few days so Gabriel, Calafiori, Timber, the three of them will be available."

What Trossard alternatives do Arsenal and Arteta have?

Trossard's rare injury setback comes at a time where Arsenal are still trying to find the perfect Eberechi Eze formula; they supposedly retain an interest in the Crystal Palace winger but do not want to pay his full release clause.

Eze would slot into Trossard's position perfectly on the left-hand side, but the Belgian's problem may also give Noni Madueke the chance to stake his claim for regular starts in Arteta's system.

The former Chelsea man was omitted from Arsenal's pre-season tour after helping the Blues reach the Club World Cup final, but he is expected to make his debut against Villarreal at the Emirates on August 6, potentially from the first whistle following Trossard's blow.

Of course, Arteta also has Gabriel Martinelli ready to go on the left flank too, and the Brazilian could be set for a fascinating head-to-head with Madueke for minutes while Trossard is recovering.

The latter is also now in the last 12 months of his Arsenal contract, but the club are said to have performed a U-turn on his future.
