Team GB went into the Games looking to defend the title they won in London 2012 four years ago, but the team of Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester, Fiona Bigwood and Spencer Wilton fell short of the top prize.

The quartet scored 78.602 to finish second behind Germany, who resumed their dominance in the event with an eighth Olympic team gold in the last nine Games.

Britain's Dujardin will have the chance to retain her individual dressage title in Monday's final.

USA made up the podium by winning bronze.
