Great Britain's medal hopes dashed in women's team sprint

GB relegated from women's team sprint

Great Britain track cycling duo Jess Varnish and Victoria Pendleton have been eliminated from the women's team sprint event.

London 2012 officials at the Velodrome have confirmed that the pair will not be permitted to contest for a medal after an illegal change-over took place during the women's first round of heats.

It is understood that Pendleton took over too early, which caused the relegation, as rules state that cyclists must not change over outside of the allocated area on the track.

The duo were in contention for a medal after securing a 32.567 time over Ukraine, which put them second overall behind China.
