Alastair Cook, Adam Lyth unbeaten at lunch

England have reached 54-0 at lunch on day two in reply to New Zealand's first-innings total of 350 in the second Test at Headingley.

Resuming on 297-8, the New Zealand tail continued to play positively before losing Matt Henry, who could only edge the ball through to Jos Buttler after backing away to attack a short ball from Stuart Broad.

England adopted the short-ball approach for much of the morning, but Broad continued to leak runs from his end as Trent Boult joined Mark Craig to put on 40 for the final wicket.

Broad wrapped up the innings when Boult sliced a shot to Adam Lyth at point, and the wicket handed the seamer an expensive five-wicket haul as he finished with 5-109 from just 17.1 overs.

The target for the tourists was early wickets after battling their way to 350, but they were met with stubborn resistance from Alastair Cook and Lyth, who is playing on his home ground in just his second Test.

Both men looked comfortable leading the hosts to the interval and Cook will resume needing just five more to break Graham Gooch's record for most Test runs by an England player.
