Kevin Pietersen desperate to build on comeback century

Pietersen: 'This is just the start'

Kevin Pietersen has insisted that his focus remains on scoring runs for Surrey after marking his return to domestic cricket by scoring 170 on Sunday.

The 34-year-old, who pulled out of the Indian Premier League in a bid to revive his England career, warmed up for the new County Championship season with a superb 149-ball innings against Oxford MCCU, but he is hopeful that there is a lot more to come over the next few months.

"I've just got to get my head down and bat," Pietersen told Surrey's YouTube channel after the visitors declared on 420-7. "That's all I want to do. You know what? If it leads to an England recall then absolutely fantastic.

"Everybody knows how hard I work. There's no substitute for hard work. I put the hard yards in this week and this is only just the start. I want to try to keep building on this and keep scoring runs.

"I just want a big summer of batting, a big summer of hopefully scoring a lot of runs."

Surrey's final pre-season game with Oxford is followed by their opening County Championship game against Glamorgan, which begins next Sunday.
