Sri Lanka beat South Africa by 180 runs in the opening one-day international between the two sides.

Kumar Sangakkara struck a superb 169 in Sri Lanka's first one-day international against South Africa as his side won by 180 runs.

Opener Upul Tharanga hit a fairly slow-paced 43 off 64 balls, with Tillakeratne Dilshan scoring just 10, but Sangakkara changed the game when he came to bat at number three.

He hit 18 fours and six sixes on his way to his 169 from just 137 balls before he was finally dismissed - caught JP Duminy off Aaron Phangiso.

In reply South Africa struggled immediately, with Rangana Herath and Narangoda Perera tearing into their batting order.

Alviro Petersen and Robin Peterson joint-topscored with 29, but their side fell to 140 all-out from less than 32 overs.
