Dean Elgar hits century as day one against New Zealand belongs to South Africa

Dean Elgar scores an unbeaten 128 to help South Africa close day one of the first Test against New Zealand on 229-4 in Dunedin.

Dean Elgar has put South Africa in a strong position with an unbeaten 128 on day one of the first Test against New Zealand in Dunedin.

The tourists, who won the toss and elected to bat, reached stumps 229-4, but the hosts have time to respond when they receive the second new ball on day two.

The Proteas' innings started with a wobble when opener Stephen Cook was dismissed for 3 after getting trapped lbw by Trent Boult in the ninth over of the day.

Hashim Amla and Jean-Paul Duminy also had disappointing spells at the crease, picking up just one run each before falling to Neil Wagner.

The wickets were not too damaging to South Africa, though, as Elgar led the way with the help of Faf du Plessis (52) and Temba Bavuma, who remains unbeaten on 38 runs.

Elgar faced 262 deliveries and scored 22 fours during his impressive stint.
