New Zealand defeat South Africa

New Zealand claim a slender one-wicket one-day international win over South Africa.

New Zealand claimed a one-wicket victory over South Africa during the one-day international meeting between the two nations in Paarl this afternoon.

Hosting South Africa opened the batting only to then lose three of their most established batsmen early on.

Hashim Amla, skipper Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers managed to make just 27 runs between them before they were all dismissed.

It was left to Francois du Plessis (57) and tail-ender Rory Kleinveldt (26) to help the Proteas beyond 200 runs, before they were eventually all out for just eight runs more from 46.2 overs.

New Zealand's reply got off to a slow start as Rob Nicol (4) and Martin Guptill (0) were out early in the innings.

That brought BJ Watling to the crease and the 27-year-old hauled his side back into contention with a knock of 45 runs before he was bowled by Ryan McLaren.

James Franklin took over the responsibility from Watling and he was in the middle unbeaten on 43 when his country reached the victory target of 209 runs with one wicket in hand.
