Former England and Hampshire all-rounder Dominic Cork has announced his retirement from cricket.

The 40-year-old, who spent three seasons at Hampshire, racked up 131 wickets in 37 Test matches for England.

Despite captaining Hampshire to victory in the FP Twenty20 final against Somerset last season, the Staffordshire-born cricketer believes that he’s too old to compete.

“It’s an emotional day for myself, it’s something that I’ve thought long and hard about,” Cork told Sky Sports News. “It was a difficult decision but I think it’s the right decision for me.

“I’m not getting any younger. I’ve had a great career and I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done in my career. I’ve got to be honest with myself that it’s time to go and let the youngsters go on.”

Hampshire revealed earlier this month that the captain was to leave at the end of the season.
