New Zealand on brink of heavy defeat

New Zealand will head into the final day of play in their first Test against India on 93-4 as they chase down an improbable 434 runs.

The Black Caps, seeking just a third win in India, were brought in to bat after their opponents declared their second innings at 377-5 in Kanpur - half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja helping the hosts on their way.

New Zealand made a dreadful start to their chase, with openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham being dismissed in the fourth over by Ravi Ashwin for a combined two runs.

Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor struggled to truly find their rhythm but did add 40 runs to the Black Caps' tally, although the latter was run out by Umesh Yadav after failing to ground his bat to sum up the tourists' frustrations, while Williamson went lbw to Ashwin.
