New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in their Test series against Sri Lanka by winning the opener in Dunedin by 122 runs.

New Zealand have taken a 1-0 lead in their series against Sri Lanka by sealing a 122-run victory in Dunedin.

The hosts required seven wickets on the final day of the clash to edge ahead in the series after Sri Lanka ended day four on 109-3.

Tim Southee impressed again with the ball as he added a third to his wicket haul in Sri Lanka's second innings, while Neil Wagner grabbed his second on day five.

Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner took two apiece as the Black Caps romped home to victory, leaving their opponents on 282 runs.

The momentum swung in New Zealand's direction as soon as Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews was bowled out by Wagner for 25, and the misery for the tourists was piled on when Santner trapped Dinesh Chandimal lbw for 58.

Kithuruwan Vithanage (38), Rangana Herath (6), Milinda Siriwardana (29) and Dushmantha Chameera (14) all tumbled as the day progressed.

The wicket that sealed victory for New Zealand was that of Suranga Lakmal, who was caught and bowled by Doug Bracewell for 23.
