Second ODI between New Zealand, Australia abandoned due to unsafe field

New Zealand, Australia second ODI abandoned

The second one-day international between New Zealand and Australia was called off without a ball being bowled due to a soaked-through field in Napier.

Rain showers had eased before the game was due to get underway, but the sodden surface was a concern for the umpires.

Fans inside McLean Park were made to wait for hours as five inspections were made before umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Chris Brown called the game off due to concerns over safety.

The frustration spilled into the dressing rooms and now New Zealand Cricket has launched an independent investigation into the ground's drainage problems, according to AAP.

New Zealand lead the three-match series following their six-run victory in Auckland on Monday.

The final ODI will be played in Hamilton on Sunday.
