Daniel Vettori named head coach of Brisbane Heat

Daniel Vettori becomes the new coach of the Brisbane Heat just days after announcing his retirement.

Daniel Vettori has been appointed the new coach of Big Bash side Brisbane Heat just days after announcing his retirement from cricket.

The 36-year-old confirmed that his playing career was over earlier this week following New Zealand's World Cup campaign, but he has wasted no time in taking on another coaching role alongside his commitment with Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"It is a big job but one that I am excited about tackling," Vettori, who signed for the team as a player in 2011, told the Heat's website.

"I found my initial experience as the coach of Bangalore in the IPL to be very rewarding last year and so I am grateful to them for allowing me this additional opportunity to develop my coaching skills and background.

"It has been a few big months for everyone with the World Cup but I am pleased to begin getting myself ready for what comes next."

Vettori replaces Stuart Law, who resigned after the team finished last in this year's competition.
