Murali Vijay century guides India to 311-4

Opener Murali Vijay's fifth Test century sees India end day one of the second Test against Australia at 311-4.

Murali Vijay hit a century to power India to 311-4 at stumps on day one of the second Test against Australia in Brisbane.

The tourists resumed on 151-3 after lunch, and they gave themselves real hope of levelling up the series at 1-1 thanks to Vijay's 144 - his fifth Test century.

A strong showing from the opener gives his side a platform to build on, with his innings eventually coming to an end when he was caught behind off Nathan Lyon.

Ajinkya Rahane shared a 124-run partnership with Vijay, ending the session on 75*, while Rohit Sharma (26) will also return to the crease when play resumes tomorrow.

Australia, who are already without Michael Clarke for this series, saw their injury woes deepen when a hamstring problem forced Mitchell Marsh from the pitch.

India are aiming to inflict a first defeat on the Baggy Greens at the Gabba since 1988.
