England lose ODI series to India

India win by five wickets

India won their one-day series with England thanks to a five-wicket victory in Mohali this afternoon.

England entered the match on the back of two consecutive defeats, needing to secure victory in order to take the series into a fifth encounter.

Alistair Cook (76), Kevin Pietersen (76) and Joe Root (57 not out) all hit half-centuries as England posted 257-7 from their 50 overs.

However, India's response began positively thanks largely to opener Rohit Sharma, who hit 83 runs before he was trapped lbw by pace-bowler Steven Finn.

India's other key contribution came from Suresh Raina with an unbeaten knock of 89.

It could have been a different outcome though when Raina was caught in the slips with 41 runs to his name. Just as he prepared to walk back to the dressing room, umpire Steve Davis handed him a reprieve by calling a dead ball.

As a result, the 26-year-old went on to produce a match-winning performance for the home side.
