England hold India to draw in first Test

England give India a scare before holding them to a draw in the first Test in Rajkot.

India lost three wickets for 24 runs but have gone on to snatch a draw against England in the first Test in Rajkot.

Bowlers Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin managed to steady the ship for the hosts, who slumped to 71-4 with at least 25 left.

India were set a target of 310 from a minimum of 49 overs, and they got off to a shaky start with Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha falling within 15 balls.

Ravi Jadeja then joined Kohli to take India to 172-6, while England captain Alastair Cook made 130 in the tourists' 260-3 declared.

Haseeb Hameed (82) narrowly missed out on a debut century as his side fell just four wickets short of a famous victory, but the English ended the afternoon as the first visiting team to secure a first-innings lead on Indian soil for four years.

The second of the five Tests will take place in Visakhapatnam this Thursday.
