Women's basketball, football in Australia faces TV axe

Women's sport in Australia takes a hit after ABC TV reportedly decide to cut coverage of their basketball and football leagues.

Australian Womensport and Recreation Association has expressed its fears over the impending lack of television coverage of its basketball and football leagues.

It is believed that ABC TV will remove coverage of the women's soccer league and the Women's National Basketball League at the end of the season as part of cost-cutting measures.

"You'd struggle to find much at all in terms of women's sport on television," The Guardian quotes association executive officer Leanne Evans as saying. "It'd be a massive disappointment for those athletes, teams and people who support it."

The government have told the TV network to find around £138.4m in savings.
