Charline Mathias eyes Rio after Baku gold

Luxembourg 800m runner Charline Mathias hopes that her gold medal at the European Games gives her the impetus to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Luxembourg runner Charline Mathias believes that her gold medal in the 800m at the European Games can be a springboard to qualify for the Olympics in Rio next summer.

Mathias posted a competition-best 2:01.77 to edge out Albanian Luiza Gega with 2:02.36 and Anastasiya Komarova of Azerbaijan on 2:02.50 - her personal best.

"I am running again tomorrow, but I think I have got a big chance now to qualify for the Rio Olympics in 2016," he told reporters.

"With this victory, I recorded a good result for my country.

"The race was hard but also fun. For the first 700m the other athletes were in front of me, but in the last 100m I gathered my strength and came first."

Mathias also beat her country's record in the women's 800m.
