Justin Gatlin through to men's 100m final

Justin Gatlin secured his spot in the final of the men's 100m thanks to a victory in the opening semi-final of the night.

The American got out of the blocks sharply and by the 50m point he had a clear lead over the rest of the field.

The 2004 Olympic champion eventually crossed the line in 9.82 seconds, which is the fastest time ever in a men's 100m semi-final.

Second spot went to Churandy Martina of the Netherlands, who set a national record with a time of 9.91 seconds.

However, former world record holder Asafa Powell will have to wait to see if his time of 9.94 seconds is enough for him to qualify for the final as a fastest runner-up.

Britain's James Dasaolu finished seventh.
