Ireland's Thomas Barr fourth in 400m hurdles final

Ireland's Thomas Barr has missed out on a medal in the men's 400m hurdles final by five hundredths of a second.

Barr was a surprise finalist after winning the third semi-final but he ran his own race as he looked to cause an upset in Rio de Janeiro.

He was sixth coming into the home straight, and despite a late surge to move himself into contention, he could not dip in front of Turkey's Yasmani Copello who hung on for third.

However, a small consolation for Barr is that he became the first Irishman to run under 48 seconds as he registered a time of 47.97s.

USA's Kerron Clement took gold in 47.73s, with Kenya's Boniface Mucheru Tumuti second in 47.78s.
