Suarez throws new javelin Olympic best

Cuban decathlete Leonel Suarez has thrown a new Olympic best in the javelin discipline of the decathlon this evening.

The 2008 bronze medallist smashed his own record of 73.98m from Beijing with a launch of 76.94m on his first of three attempts at the Olympic Stadium.

America's Ashton Eaton currently leads the overall standings and could break his own world record with a strong performance this evening.

His main competitor, fellow American Trey Hardee, threw a season's best of 66.65m alongside Suarez in group A of the javelin this evening.
