The Steelers drove into range of the endzone on their first possession of the game, but quarterback Landry Jones suffered a foot injury on third down before Chris Boswell put his side ahead with a field goal.
The injury brought Ben Roethlisberger into the game, despite the 33-year-old struggling with a foot problem throughout the week, which was expected to rule him out of the contest.
Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel fired a series of completions to take his side into the range of kicker Travis Coons, and although they were held out of the endzone, Coons levelled the scores with a 23-yard field goal.
Roethlisberger showed no ill effects of his foot injury as he managed to guide the Steelers downfield, but he couldn't find the endzone, resulting in a 34-yard field goal from Boswell.
The Steelers extended their advantage after a costly penalty from Armonty Bryant, and Roethlisberger punished the Browns defender by firing to Antonio Brown for a touchdown. The quarterback then went back to the wideout to seal the two-point conversion.
Roethlisberger notched his second touchdown throw of the match when he lofted the ball deep for Martavis Bryant to make the grab over his man and sprint into the endzone to complete the 32-yard score.
