Tannehill signs contract extension until 2020

The Miami Dolphins have announced that they have signed quarterback Ryan Tannehill to a six-year contract extension.

The 26-year-old was selected by the AFC East side in the first round of the 2012 Draft, and has become a consistent signal caller for the club in his first three years in the NFL.

The Dolphins ensured Tannehill's stay at the club beyond the 2015 season by exercising the fifth-year option on his contract last month.

However, Joe Philbin's men have now locked down his future with the AFC East side until the end of the 2020 campaign in a deal worth $96m (£61.3m), with $45m (£28.7m) guaranteed.

"We are thrilled that we were able to sign Ryan to an extension," Dolphins vice-president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum told the club's official website. "He is an ascending talent, a team leader and checks all of the boxes you are looking for at the position."

General manager Dennis Hickey added: "Signing Ryan to this deal is important to our franchise. He is a proven quarterback in this league that combines a talented skillset with work ethic, passion, toughness, and a team first mentality.

"We are committed and believe in Ryan as our quarterback for the long-term and we are excited to be able to sign him to this extension."

Tannehill has thrown for 11,252 yards along with 63 touchdowns to 42 interceptions in his three years in the NFL.
