Brendan Rodgers: 'Kieran Tierney may need surgery'

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reveals that young left-back Kieran Tierney may require jaw surgery.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that young defender Kieran Tierney may require an operation after he was forced off just 23 minutes into yesterday's Scottish Cup final win at Hampden Park.

The 19-year-old left-back left the pitch with blood streaming from his mouth after receiving an elbow in the face from Aberdeen striker Jayden Stockley and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital in Glasgow.

Tierney was absent as Celtic went on to claim a dramatic stoppage-time victory through Tom Rogic - in the process helping Rodgers's side to an unbeaten domestic treble - but later returned in time for the post-match celebrations.

"His mouth is a bit swollen. He may need an operation on his mouth," Rodgers told reporters afterwards. "He is still here and got his medal.

"I think the teeth had come through the palate in the top of his mouth. I can't imagine how sore that is so he'll need some sort of protective surgery.

"He'll need a specialist to look at it, so I don't want to rule him in or out [of Scotland's game against England]."

Tiernay subsequently took to Twitter to reveal that he had suffered a broken jaw but insisted that it was "worth" it.

Tiernay's form for Celtic this season has sparked interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United.
