England pipped to women's triathlon gold

Jess Learmonth claims silver for Team England in the women's triathlon on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games.

Team England's Jess Learmonth has claimed silver in the women's triathlon on the opening day of competition at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Vicky Holland - bronze medal winner at the Rio Olympics - made significant progress in the final leg, the 5km sprint, but had to settle for fourth place, missing out on bronze by four seconds.

Learmonth had been neck and neck with Bermuda's Flora Duffy until the pair entered the sprint, when Duffy surged ahead to take gold with a 43-second advantage.

England's Sophie Coldwell had also been in medal contention until the last leg, sitting pretty in the bronze spot, but dropped down to sixth by the time she reached the finish line.

Canada's Joanna Brown ultimately claimed the third place on the podium thanks to the best sprint of any athlete, completing the distance in 16 minutes 31 seconds.

England's gold-medal hopes in the triathlon now lie with the Brownlee brothers, who will go on to compete in the men's event later today.
