USA's Missy Franklin fails to medal in 100m backstroke world final

Olympic champion Missy Franklin failed to medal in the 100m backstroke final at the World Championships in Kazan after finishing fifth.

The 20-year-old, who won Olympic gold in this event at London 2012, fell behind the leaders in the first 50m following a poor start.

The nine-time world champion failed to recover and Australian duo Emily Seebohm and Madison Wilson were able to take the reins and claim gold and silver respectively.

Seebohm clocked a winning time of 58.26s, while Franklin touched the wall in 59.40s, two places behind bronze-medal winner Mie Oe Nielsen of Denmark.

Meanwhile, Great Britain's Lauren Quigley finished in seventh place.
