Meilutyte beaten by home favourite

World record holder Ruta Meilutyte has been narrowly beaten by Russian home favourite Yuliya Efimova in the 100m breaststroke final at the World Championships in Kazan.

The Lithuanian, who was the overwhelming favourite to defend her title, led the way in the first 50m and looked as though she would comfortably add another gold medal to her successes.

However, Efimova, who won Olympic bronze in the 200m breaststroke final at London 2012, charged ahead in the final 25m in front of a home crowd to claim her fourth world title in 1:05.66.

Meilutyte claimed silver, while Jamaica's Alia Atkinson earned bronze.
