Adam Peaty breaks 100m breaststroke world record

Adam Peaty has broken the 100m breaststroke world record at the British Swimming Championships in London.

The European champion recorded a time of 57.92 seconds, over half a second inside the previous mark of 58.46s, and the Uttoxeter-born swimmer has admitted that he was surprised by the level of his display.

The 20-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live: "I kind of surprised myself. I was going to wait until Kazan to produce that time and I can't really believe it.

"I just dived in hoping for a 58 really and I have to say a big thank you to my family for supporting me."

Ross Murdoch came home in second place in a time of 59.13s, while James Wilby was in third.
