Olympian Meilutyte suffers broken elbow

Olympic swimmer Ruta Meilutyte has undergone surgery after breaking an elbow following a fall off her bicycle.

The 18-year-old Lithuanian, who is based in Plymouth, went under the knife on Monday, three days after the accident.

Despite the blow, Meilutyte's coach Jon Rudd has no concerns that the injury will hugely affect her preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"It's going to be a four-week process before she's back in the water doing regular-type swimming," Rudd told BBC Sport. "It's not too desperate at all with us being well over 40 weeks away from the Olympic Games."

Meilutyte, who is the world-record holder in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, won Olympic gold in the 100m at London 2012.

The teenager also has one gold and two silver World Championship medals to her name.
