James Wilby defeats Scott Murdoch for 200m title

Team England's James Wilby defeats favourite Ross Murdoch of Scotland to take the 200m breaststroke title at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Team England swimmer James Wilby has dethroned Scotland's Scott Murdoch to take the 200m breaststroke title at the Commonwealth Games.

Murdoch set a new Games record in the event in Glasgow four years ago and was the favourite heading into today's final, but Wilby powered through with a dramatic late surge to take the gold medal.

The Scot was neck and neck with home favourite Matt Wilson heading into the final length but with less than 20m remaining, Wilby appeared from nowhere to edge ahead at the last, finishing with a time of 2:08.05 - shaving almost two seconds off his personal best in the process.

Murdoch took the silver, finishing 0.27s back, while Wilson did enough for bronze with a final time of 2:08.64.

Wilby's teammate Andrew Willis, who was third on the podium in the event at Glasgow, had to settle for fourth this time round with a final time of 2:09.31.
