Adam Peaty retains 100m breaststroke title

Team England's Adam Peaty storms to gold in the men's 100m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games.

Team England's Adam Peaty has collected his first medal of the Commonwealth Games, retaining his title in the men's 100m breaststroke event.

The Olympic champion breezed through the heats yesterday by setting a new Games record, and his victory in the final tonight was in no doubt as he claimed gold with a time of 58.84 seconds.

Teammate James Wilby collected gold in the 200m distance of the stroke on Thursday but was forced to play second fiddle to Peaty tonight, taking home the silver following a close battle with South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh.

Wilby's time of 59.43 was just enough to secure silver, with Van der Burgh having to settle for bronze as he finished one hundredth of a second back.

Scotland duo Ross Murdoch and Craig Benson were fifth and sixth respectively, while England's Andrew Willis brought up the rear with a time of 1:01.13.

Peaty is back in action tomorrow morning when he begins qualifying for the 50m breaststroke.
