Russian shooter Vitaly Fokeev "very happy" with gold medal success

Russian Federation's Vitaly Fokeev has expressed his delight at claiming gold in the men's double trap shooting event at the first ever European Games.

The former world champion hit 29 out of 30 targets to come out on top at the Baku Shooting Centre, ensuring not just a medal but also a place at next year's Rio Olympics.

Fokeev struggled to hide his joy after seeing off the challenge of Hungary's Richard Bognar in the final, which followed hot on the heels of Alexey Alipov's success in the men's trap on Thursday.

"I am very happy because I got a gold medal from this great competition and Russia got gold medals two days in a row [in shooting]," he told reporters. "Since the 2006 world championship gold medal it is the first gold in a big, great tournament that I have got.

"It is great to put this gold medal into my collection and look at them every day as much as I can. It is just priceless. Luckily I did well and got that ticket for the Olympics for my country."

Antonino Barilla of Italy took bronze in the shooting event, but Great Britain hopeful Steven Scott failed to progress beyond the semi-finals.
