Newcastle Falcons off the mark in Aviva Premiership with first victory

Newcastle Falcons stage a late surge to pick up their first win of the Aviva Premiership season against Exeter Chiefs this afternoon.

Newcastle Falcons have picked up their first win of the Aviva Premiership season courtesy of a 29-24 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Kingston Park.

Just five minutes had passed before Jack Yeandle crossed over for the first try of the afternoon to give the visitors an early lead to hold onto.

That slender advantage was soon cut out when Juan Pablo Socino found the sticks with two penalties in the space of four minutes, however, swinging the game in his side's advantage.

Ben White was the second Chiefs player to find the try line, capitalising on Alex Tait's spilt pass, although Sinoti Sinoti touched down three minutes later to put his side ahead once more.

Sociono added a third converted penalty to his tally, which was soon cancelled out when Henry Slade crossed over on the brink of half time for Rob Baxter's men.

Gareth Steenson found the target with three pens of his own in the second half, although the game's fifth try did not come until the 67th minute when some powerful running allowed Tom Catterick to squeeze the ball over, with the points officially being awarded after confirmation from the TMO.

Socino kicked over for the first successful conversion of the afternoon, and just two minutes later Noah Cato cantered over on the left to put the Falcons ahead.

Newcastle remained strong in the final 10 minutes to see out the game, picking up some much needed points which sees them climb away from bottom place in the table.
