Ireland and Munster lock Paul O'Connell is not expected to return until the New Year as he recovers from a lower back injury.

Ireland and Munster lock Paul O'Connell will see a specialist in the New Year as he continues to suffer from a lower back injury.

The 33-year-old has made just two appearances for the club this season, but a statement from Munster revealed that his treatment is "progressing satisfactorily".

However, he will see a specialist for further review in January and is therefore not expected to return for at least three months.

O'Connell has part of the Irish squad that trained ahead of the November internationals but was not deemed fit enough to play in any of their three matches.
