London Irish open up a five-point gap to Sale Sharks with a win over Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership.

London Irish have ground out a narrow win over Gloucester to open up a five-point gap to the bottom of the Aviva Premiership table.

Gloucester were unable to defend against George Skivington in the opening half, allowing the lock to score two tries in the first 40 minutes.

Freddie Burns scored all of the home side's points through penalties, as Gloucester struggled to create try-scoring opportunities.

Tom Homer took over the kicking duties from Steve Shingler, after he missed three of five kicks for the Exiles, and helped open up a six-point lead for London Irish inside the last 10 minutes.

Gloucester finished the game with 14 men after Will James was shown a yellow card three minutes from full time.

The win increases the gap between London Irish and bottom side Sale Sharks, while Gloucester remain fourth.
