Rob Baxter: 'Dave Lewis still has big part to play at Exeter Chiefs'

Rob Baxter insists that Dave Lewis will "get some opportunities" to impress in the first team following news that the scrum-half has signed a new deal at Exeter Chiefs.

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has vowed that Dave Lewis will get his chance to shine once more in the coming weeks, having signed a new deal at the club.

The 25-year-old scrum-half, who has committed the next two years of his future to the Chiefs, has missed large parts of the season to date due to injury.

Lewis is now back to full fitness, however, and Baxter believes that his return will help strengthen competition for a starting spot in the team.

"Dave's probably been a bit unfortunate with the injury at the start of the season," he told the club's official website. "Maybe not for him but for us the season started very well. Will Chudley has been showing some very good Premiership form and that's meant Dave's opportunities have been limited because Haydn [Thomas] has been doing a good job for us as well.

"A bit like in the last LV and European block, Dave will get some opportunities in the next five or six weeks, we very much see it being a three-way fight between them when we get back out of that block. There's a lot of the season left yet for Dave."

Manchester-born Lewis rejoined Exeter at the beginning of last season, helping the club to clinch the LV= trophy last March.
