Sharapova explains 'Sugarpova' name drop

Former tennis world number one Maria Sharapova has revealed that she will not be changing her surname to 'Sugarpova' for the US Open.

The Russian-born pro had considered the temporary name-change for the duration of the tournament in order to promote her Sugarpova sweets brand, which has been established for one year.

During the launch of her new accessories range in New York, the 26-year-old explained why it was not possible to officially change her name in time for the tournament, which begins next week.

Sharapova has also stated that she remains close with Jimmy Connors, despite dropping him as coach after one game.
