A group of United States swimmers, including 12-time Olympic medallist Ryan Lochte, are robbed in Rio by thieves posing as police.

A group of United States swimmers, including Ryan Lochte, have been robbed in Rio by thieves posing as police.

Lochte took his Olympic medal tally to 12 at this summer's Games, and attended a party at the French team's hospitality base following the last day of swimming action yesterday.

However, while with teammates Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen on his way back to the Athletes' Village his taxi was stopped by thieves posing as police, who proceeded to take the quartet's belongings.

"Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes' money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities," read a statement from the United States Olympic Committee.

Lochte was part of USA's 4x200m freestyle relay team that won gold in Rio, and is the second most decorated male Olympic swimmer of all time, behind only Michael Phelps.
