Michael Phelps's 'drink-driving trial postponed until December'

The most successful Olympian in history Michael Phelps will reportedly stand trial for drink-driving one month later than originally scheduled.

The 29-year-old, who came out of retirement earlier this year, was charged with the offence in September after he was arrested for travelling at 84mph in a 45mph zone in Baltimore.

After apologising for his actions, Phelps announced that he will take a break from swimming in order to attend a treatment programme.

The sportsman's defence attorney Steven A Allen has told ESPN that he requested to push back the trial in order to finish a six-week programme.

The 18-time Olympic gold medallist, whose blood alcohol level was well above the 0.08% limit, will be tried at Baltimore District Court on December 19.
