South Africa captain Senzo Meyiwa has been shot dead in his homeland.

Early reports have claimed that the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was killed on Sunday just hours after playing in a 4-1 win for his side against Ajax Cape Town.

The SA police stated that the incident occurred around 8pm in Vosloorus, with various reports claiming that the keeper was fatally wounded by intruders at his partner's home.

Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza said: "This is a sad loss to Senzo's family especially his children, to Orlando Pirates and the nation."

Meyiwa's international teammate Dean Furman tweeted: "Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa. thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time."

A reward of R150,000 (£8,500) is on offer for any information that leads to an arrest, and the Pirates are planning to hold a press conference on Monday.
