Airport to be named after Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is to have an airport named after him in his native Madeira.

An airport in Madeira is to be renamed in honour of Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal's Euro 2016 triumph.

The 31-year-old, who grew up in the island's capital Funchal, already has a museum and a hotel in his name in the city, as well as a large bronze statue in his image.

Now the main airport is to be rebranded as the "Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo airport", local governor Miguel Albuquerque confirmed to Mundo Deportivo.

Ronaldo is currently holidaying on a private yacht in Ibiza following Portugal's defeat of France in the final of the tournament earlier this month.

The forward was stretchered off in tears during the first half of the encounter at the Stade de France and has since been ruled out of the Super Cup final next month.
