Ian Thorpe "fighting" against infection following shoulder surgery

Five-time Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe is "fighting" against infection following shoulder surgery.

Ian Thorpe's manager James Erskine has insisted that the five-time Olympic champion is "fighting" against the infection that he contracted while in hospital.

The 31-year-old Australian swimmer suffered the problem while having shoulder surgery.

Reports emerged claiming that the sportsman could lose his arm as a result of the infection, but Erskine has played down these suggestions.

"Like all these things, the doctors and nurses in Australia are good and it's bad luck that he got this and he's fighting it like he always has," Thorpe told ABC News 24. "He will get better quickly, I'm sure."

Thorpe was admitted to rehab in February after he was spotted looking disoriented near to his parents' home in Sydney.
