Sports coverage affected by licence fee proposals

Sports fans may have to pay an additional subscription to watch sport on the BBC under new plans outlined in a government report into the licence fee.

Sports fans will be affected if plans to charge subscription fees for premium programming on the BBC are implemented.

Plans to cut the basic licence fee have been unveiled, but those who wish to watch sports coverage and some of the network's leading dramas would have to pay an additional subscription.

The plans were revealed as part of government examination into the cost of running of the BBC, ahead of a charter review to come next year.

The BBC has recently lost the rights to broadcast the Olympics to Eurosport from 2022 onwards, and will share coverage of the Six Nations with ITV.
