Scottish police confirm that they are investigating the "unexplained" death of young cricketer Matthew Hobden more than 600 miles from his Sussex home.

Scottish police have confirmed that they are investigating the "unexplained" death of young cricketer Matthew Hobden.

The 22-year-old fast bowler's death was announced on Saturday by his club Sussex, who said in a statement that they were "deeply shocked" by the news.

Hobden is thought to have died in the small town of Forres in the North-East area of Scotland, more than 600 miles away from his home in Sussex.

"The death of the male, who is believed to be from the Sussex area, is currently being treated as unexplained," local police confirmed in a statement to The Guardian.

"Enquiries are at a very early stage but there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal as is usual procedure."

England players wore black armbands as a tribute to Hobden on day two of the second Test with South Africa in Cape Town.
