Savage taken to hospital

Former footballer Robbie Savage was rushed to hospital during a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro after suffering altitude sickness.

The 38-year-old took on the trek for charity, but fell ill once he had scaled 12,000ft of the 19,341ft mountain in Tanzania, East Africa.

After being taken to hospital, Savage was diagnosed with critical levels of oxygen in the blood and fluids in the lungs.

"I'm absolutely gutted I didn't make it to the top," The Mirror quotes Savage as saying.

"I thought my head was going to explode, I felt dizzy and couldn't breathe. I had to be rushed down to a safe altitude."

It took medics eight hours to remove Savage from the area.
