Former Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger is charged with common assault following an arrest in the city centre.

Former Newcastle United striker has been charged with common assault following an alleged incident at an entertainment complex.

Police were called to the scene at a car park at The Gate in the North-East city following reports of an argument between two people.

"At 7.09pm yesterday evening police received a report of a fight in the car park area at The Gate, Newcastle," Sky News quotes a Northumbria Police spokesman as saying.

"A 21-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault and he is currently in custody helping police with inquiries."

The frontman left the Magpies by mutual consent a fortnight ago.
