Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne joins Twitter

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne sets up a Twitter account and amasses over 270,000 followers in less than one day.

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has become the latest famous figure to create an account on social networking website Twitter.

The 46-year-old has become an online presence just months after he hit the headlines for spending a stint in a US rehab facility in a bid to battle his alcohol addiction.

Despite coming through the treatment, the ex-midfielder was later arrested and fined £1,000 for a drunken assault at a railway station in the summer.

Gascoigne has amassed over 270,000 followers in 18 hours, two of whom include television host Piers Morgan and his former England teammate Gary Lineker.
