Paul Gascoigne: 'I was bored, so I starting drinking again'

Gascoigne: 'I drank due to boredom'

England legend Paul Gascoigne has revealed that boredom forced him into falling back into alcohol addiction.

The 45-year-old, who has had a long-running battle with drink and drugs, completed a five-week stint at a rehab facility in the United States.

"There was no-one to blame for my relapse," Gascoigne told Sky Sports News. "I might drink in the next hour, but that's what it is, being an alcoholic. I was just bored, which is the worst thing for me.

"I've been detoxed before, I knew I was in a bad way. I texted 'help' to everybody. [Rehab] was alright for the first couple of days but the third day, the shakes were horrendous. The doctor said, 'I don't think this guy's gonna make it', and then I panicked."

A number of footballers including Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere are thought to have financially contributed to Gascoigne's treatment.
